Quem nunca passou por maus momentos, hein? Todo mundo já ficou triste um dia e precisou de alguém para dar aquela força, não é verdade? Hoje, vamos aprender maneiras de dizermos, em inglês, o quanto estamos tristes e como consolar um amigo que está desanimado, 'pra baixo’.

Na língua inglesa, quando queremos demonstrar que estamos tristes, geralmente dizemos “I am/feel sad.” Porém, há outras maneiras de exprimir tristeza, que valem a pena ser aprendidas, já que fazem parte da linguagem informal. 

Caso você escute alguém dizer, por exemplo, “When I wake up, I feel blue”, não pense que essa pessoa está passando mal ou está 'azul de fome’. Na verdade, a expressão idiomática “I feel blue” nada mais é do que “eu estou triste/ desanimado (a)’. Também se expressa tristeza dizendo “I feel down”, que equivale ao nosso “eu tô pra baixo”. 

Agora, vá la que você esteja na situação de ter de levantar o astral de alguém. O que você poderia dizer em inglês, hein? Temos várias expressões que foram agrupadas abaixo para uma melhor compreensão. No primeiro grupo, há exemplos de phrasal verbs (= verbos frasais), e, consequentemente, a linguagem é bem informal. Lembrando que todos os verbos listados são usados para animar alguém, deixá-lo mais feliz e esperançoso. 

• Cheer up! e.g=Cheer up! Things aren’t really that bad.
• Chin up!
• Buck up=I took him out to lunch to try to buck him up a bit.
• Perck up=. to make or become more cheerful, hopeful, or lively
• Lighten up= to become more relaxed and less serious:, e.g  Lighten up! I was only joking

As formas apresentadas no segundo grupo não causam dificuldade para nós brasileiros, pois geralmente procuramos consolar alguém dizendo ‘Sorria!’, ou  'Não é o fim do mundo’.

As expressões do terceiro grupo são idiomáticas/provérbios na língua inglesa que encorajam a pessoa a esquecer o que aconteceu e seguir em frente. Podemos, facilmente, encontrar um equivalente, em português, das três últimas. “Look on the bright side' significa ‘Olhe para a lado bom/ positivo’.'Every cloud has a silver linen’ é o mesmo que dizer “há males que vêm por bem”. "Don’t cry over the spilt milk' equivale a “Não chore pelo leite derramado”

2)Barking dogs seldom bite=Those who make loud threats seldom carry them out. e.g Don’t be afraid of dogs that bark or people that threaten you because they rarely take action. = “Cão que ladra não morde.”

3)”Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched".=Do not make plans based on something that has not happened. Jane was sure her boss would give her a rise , so she decided to book an expensive holiday. I told her not to count her chickens before they’re hatched. “Não conte vitória antes do tempo”, ou o popular “Não conte com o ovo no cu da galinha

4)"A leopard cannot change its spots"=A person's nature cannot change.= e.g “Honestly, I don’t think that your boyfriend will change after marriage, after all a leopard does’t change its spots. “Pau que nasce torto morre torto”.

5)"Put the cart before the horse”= Do something in an incorrect order.e.g I think buying a ticket before we make any plans is putting the cart before the horse.= "Colocar o carro na frente dos bois.”
